D' Type Joining Shackles (Lugged), also known as , Lugged Joining Shackle, and some customers also just called it Joining Shackle, is produced to ISO 1704 standards, serves a specific role in marine anchoring systems. Unlike the Kenter Link, it is not designed to fit into a gypsy wheel.
Traditionally, this lugged shackle type was used to join lengths of anchor cable together, a function primarily performed today by the Kenter lugless joining shackle. However, its main contemporary application is to connect the anchor chain directly to the anchor itself on modern vessels.
A crucial operational note: when used for its traditional purpose of joining cable lengths, the shackle's rounded crown must face forward to prevent fouling the anchor during deployment. Be aware that the orientation rule is reversed for the specific anchor crown shackle and the 'D' shackle connecting directly to the anchor; they face opposite to other joining shackles in the cable.
The D-type shackle consists of two halves securely joined by a central chock and a taper pin. To connect chains, the taper pin is removed to "unlock" the assembly. When used to join two lengths of chain, it requires studless end links on both sides. While historically used for cable joining, the D Type Joining Shackle became largely obsolete for this application following the introduction of the more efficient Kenter shackle. However, D Type Shackles remain available in a wide range of sizes, typically from 11 mm to 162 mm in diameter, and in material Grades 2, 3.
